Intra-Oral Level II Dental Assistant - Hamilton Mountain

Program Info


This Intra-Oral Dental Assistant program will prepare students to begin a career in the dental assisting field.

Students will learn how to take and process radiographs, polish teeth, apply fluoride treatments; instruct clients in oral hygiene; place pit and fissure sealants; apply topical anesthetic; apply desensitizing agents; polish restorations; oral irrigation; apply over-the counter whitening agents, or take preliminary impressions for study casts.

Dental Assistant Courses
Students will take classes in:

  • Orientation to Dentistry
  • Oral Facial Science
  • Dental Materials/Environmental Health and Safety WHMIS
  • Clinical Dentistry
  • Preventive Dentistry and Nutrition
  • Prevention of Disease and Transmission
  • Oral Pathology
  • Diagnostic Records
  • Pharmacology
  • Medical Emergencies/CPR/First Aid
  • Dental Radiography
  • Practice Management
  • Dental Specialties

Students will also get hands-on training preparing treatment rooms, sterilizing dental equipment, assists dentists with suctioning apparatus, and preparing dental materials. Administrative training includes office procedures like bookkeeping and appointment control.

Successful graduates of the Level I component of this program will be eligible to write the certification exam through the ODAA and upon passing, will attain the designation of CDA – Certified Dental Assistant. This certification is recognized throughout Ontario by many employers in the dental community. Interested students must register and pay the examination fees to the ODAA.

 

Career Opportunities
After successfully completing the Intra-Oral Dental Assisting program, the graduate may seek employment in a variety of dental offices such as:

• General Dentist
• Endodontist
• Periodontist
• Orthodontist
• Pedodontist
• Prosthodontist
• Oralmaxillofacial Surgeon

Other career opportunities may be found as a dental sales representative for a dental distribution / manufacturing company. Positions are also available in the dental department of a hospital, dental laboratory or with the public health department.
